FACIAL PAIN SURVEY

"STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN"

©Copyright 1998 by Mary Rose Whitney

The following survey should not be confused with a facial neuralgia survey developed by Jakke Makela, Leslie Carroll, Polly Potter and volunteers from the TN-L mailing list in 1996-97.  That survey was never distributed and was incorporated into a new Facial  Pain Survey being distributed by the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association. The TNA survey will establish a National Patient Registry to compile information on the history and treatments of facial neuralgia disorders. To participate in the TNA   project,

DISCLAIMER:  In no way does this survey constitute nor convey specific medical advice.

Below are the results of the objective part of an Internet survey on Facial Pain conducted during the spring of 1998 by Mary Rose Whitney and Joyce Sullivan. There were a total of 130 participants, most of whom belong to TN-L, an internet mailing list for people with trigeminal neuralgia and related facial neuralgia disorders.

This is an attempt by the authors to shed light on sources of facial pain. While some causes have been identified (compression, MS), many fall into the category of unknown. This often leads to protracted periods of frustrated searching for a solution. This research is often peppered with conflicting professional opinions. While this survey in no way is meant to serve as a solution, its goal is to heighten awareness in an often denied source of facial pain.

Included in this survey are questions pertaining to dental procedures, MVD (microvascular decompression) and other TN (trigeminal neuralgia) surgical procedures. The primary goal of the authors is for the Health Care Provider to "STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN" so unnecessary dental and medical procedures are not undertaken.

Not all of the questions were answered, so the total for each question may not total to 130. All percentages for responses are calculated on the number of participants for EACH INDIVIDUAL question. Editorial comments appear in italics.  We estimate
the figures are accurate at better than plus / minus 5% at the 95% confidence level. While this survey may not satisfy rigorous scientific standards, we feel the results are worth publishing and may provide useful information to facial neuralgia patients and researchers. Perhaps in some small way through diligence, awareness and hope, a light may shine and shed some answers to these very painful disorders.

.

Childhood/Teen Injuries
Of the 40, 14 claimed injuries as a child/teen e.g. sports-related injuries.  Two of the fourteen reported physical abuse and one claimed an arrow was shot into the eye.

All but two of these respondents had a 25 year average span from time of childhood/teen injury to the onset of their facial neuralgia pain.   The other two respondents had approximately a 12 year lapse.

Of these 14 respondents who claimed childhood/teen injuries, 10 claimed adult onset of facial pain immediately after a dental procedure. The remaining 4 do not recall what could have caused the onset of facial pain.  More than half of these respondents speculated on a possible connection between their facial/head traumas and their facial pain.

Adulthood Injuries
Of the remaining 26 respondents to this questions, 6 claim onset due to Auto Accidents. Of these six, three suffered head concussions.
6 claim sports-related head / neck injuries prior to the onset of facial pain.  5 claim accidental injuries to the head / face area (e.g. hitting head on an object or walking into a door).  2 claimed spousal abuse. One claimed electrical shock to the face area.  One resported he/she 'suffered a seizure and passed our falling to the floor."
