SUMATRIPTAN
Drug Treatments for Facial Neuralgias

Disclaimer.

Originally used by injection. Now also available in tablet form under brand name Imitrex.

Sumatriptan is a relatively new drug that has been successfully used to treat migraines and cluster headaches.  To our knowledge, no studies have been done on its use in treating Trigeminal Neuralgia or other facial neuralgias. However, the possibility was brought to our attention by a doctor, so perhaps someone somewhere is testing it right now...

Like any drug, sumatriptan has its defenders and detractors. For some info see the following links, none of which links sumatriptan to TN directly. Note that this information is presented only speculatively.

DGI:Imitrex.
Uses simpler language.

"Migraine Killer".
Extremely critical article, almost hysterically so, but it does point out the potential dangers of sumatriptan.
